Behind the low metal wall is a deep pit of sewage detritus, gathered from the brick sewer seen on the far wall. The flow is redirected to the east, through a short drop and into the mid-Toronto interceptor, a very full, very fast sewer that, during dry weather, takes most of Toronto's nastiness to the Ashbridges Bay Treatment Plant. This leaves most of the sewers seen on this site - the East Toronto system and the Garrison Creek sewers, for example - used only as overflows, during wet weather. Unfortunately, this East Toronto system seems to overflow somewhat regularly, leading directly into Coatsworth Cut, making the general Ashbridges Bay area a great place for a paddling club (mere metres from the outfall of the East Toronto overflow), a few sailing clubs, and one of the most popular beaches in the city.
